Central Asia: New prospects for economic development
On March 15, Tashkent hosted the First Central Asian Economic Forum.
Representatives of governments of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan discussed issues of further development of economic cooperation between the countries of the region, increasing the volume of mutual trade and tourism attractiveness at this major forum, organized for the first time on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
At the opening ceremony of the forum it was noted that it is necessary to strengthen interregional cooperation in solving such urgent problems as ensuring economic stability and security in Central Asian countries, export diversification, search for technological and innovative solutions in leading industries.
Special attention was paid to issues of improving transport and logistics systems, providing countries of the region with the opportunity to enter the sea ports and world markets, increasing the share of tourism sector in economy through the effective use of existing tourism potential.
Proposals were considered on expanding multilateral trade and investment cooperation, increasing tourism attractiveness, transport and transit potential of Central Asia. In particular, the Uzbek side promoted the initiative on introducing Schengen – Silk Road visa in Central Asia. Representatives of Kazakhstan forwarded a proposal on improving the investment climate in the region, establishing cooperation in space industry.
Initiatives aimed at implementation of joint investment projects in free economic zones, opening joint ventures in leading industries, expansion of international transport corridors were forwarded at the forum.
Within the framework of the First Central Asian Economic Forum, a cooperative exchange of business circles of the region’s countries, as well as exhibition of products of national producers was organized at Uzexpocentre.
Following the forum, the parties signed a joint communiqué.
